Uitkoms Home for Girls was established in 1944 to provide residential accommodation to pregnant girls. Over the years this has broadened to include teenage girls requiring physical, emotional and/or spiritual support as a result of exposure to abuse, exploitation, and neglect of a physical, sexual, or emotional nature. The home is situated in Observatory, bordering Yeoville, Johannesburg and accommodates girls who are generally between the ages of 12 and 18. Most of the placements come through the courts, or the home is used as a ‘Place of Safety’. Private placements are rare but also accommodated.
