Bet Sheekoom

Port Elizabeth , Eastern Cape

Bet Sheekoom has been operating in the Eastern Cape since 2001 and registered as an NPO in 2005. Bet Sheekoom is a residential safe house. We accommodate women who come out of the following traumatic situations: Domestic Violence, Human Trafficking, Drug Addiction, Commercial Sex workers and homeless women. Bet Sheekoom is the only NPO in the Eastern Cape that has a recognized exit program for commercial sex workers. We have a rehabilitation program that deals with addictions and personal growth. We provide Psychological and lay counselling to the women we serve. Bet Sheekoom has been recognized as being one of the very few facilities in the country that will take on long term residents. We have been instrumental in assisting the police, hospitals, rape crisis centers and churches by taking in referrals from them. Special Assignment, Bay TV and many radio stations, Kingfisher FM, Bay FM, Algoa FM, to name a few have done documentaries and radio talk shows on the work we do. Bet Sheekoom is the only NPO registered as a Victim Empowerment Center with the Department of Social Development. Although Bet Sheekoom is a Christian Faith Based Organization we do not turn any women away regardless of their religion, race or creed. Our program is Bible based. Through training and development we aim to bring the individual to wholeness and to become self-sufficient. Once the resident is ready we send them on a Job Readiness course and then assist with finding employment for them. The services Bet Sheekoom provides are predominantly to women who come from previously disadvantaged communities.
